Okay, I'll admit, this blog doesn't have much to do with Star Wars or muffins. It's mostly to do with a college student with some time to kill putting her ramblings and observations on the internet. Plus my roommates need a break from hearing me complain about sexist commercials and reality tv shows. A little bit of both, really.

Project Runway = Drama

Well Sweet P finally got eliminated tonight, on the last episode before the Bryant Park finale. She skated by for so long, if she had gotten to the finals I would've seriously doubted the taste levels of the judges, to borrow their phrase.

As soon as I saw the final designs I was trying to decide whether it would be Jillian, Christian, and Rami, or Jillian, Christian, and Chris. I was pulling for Rami. His design was pretty predictable and underwhelming, but Chris? Really? His design was nice for a retread of the Avant Garde challenge, but even so, he had already been auf'd and was there but for the grace of Jack's illness. Plus, Rami is so handsome. I like to see him standing. Just.. standing.

Unsurprisingly they kept both Rami and Chris, but gave them another hoop to jump through. I'm pretty confident that Rami will win the mini-challenge and beat Chris to Bryant Park. He's always saying he's "passionate about draping," but I hope that he doesn't think that "We are transported to Ancient Greece where thread has not been invented!" is an acceptable theme for a collection.

Why I love Spain, part 58,284,927

Broadsheet over at Salon has a nice little story about attempts to standardize women's clothing sizes in Spain, so that more diverse and natural body types will have an easier time finding clothes that fit nicely. I've long wondered why women aren't afforded the courtesy of height-width measurements instead of meaningless numbers while shopping for pants. This study proposes bust, waist, and hip measurements for tops as well.

On top of that, the article says that several retailers have agreed to only use mannequins in size 38 (eight to us) or up. Wow, now that is real progress. It reminds me of how much more I liked shopping for shoes in Spain: here, the display shoe is always a ridiculously small five or six, but in Spain display shoes were almost always my size (European 38, American 7-7.5). I loved this because then I didn't have to work up my courage to ask a snotty Sevillana for help finding my size.

The one thing I'm concerned about, though, is the sheer amount of different sizes that would be necessary if they go to a bust-waist-hips measurement system. I feel like if this happened in America, they would compensate for the ridiculous array of exacting sizes by only stocking the smallest ones. Either way, I'm interested to see how this will work out.

Oh Sweet, Sweet Irony

Watching this commercial for Carson Kressley's new show on Lifetime, "How to Look Good Naked," I thought that the show seems like a good idea. Clearly the show has a message of loving ourselves for who we are, and learning to appreciate and work with what we have been given:

Very uplifting, no? And who could argue that those women aren't beautiful, especially with their newfound self-confidence? No, my problem with this commercial came at the end.

It seems that this show is being sponsored by a company called "Weight Loss Surgical Center." It would be humorous enough if the two commercials had simply be shown adjacently, but a show about loving your body being sponsored by a company selling gastric bypasses? And their motto: "Less of you, more of life!"
